The Catenians

50 Years in the saddle – and still loving it!

Riding a motorbike is an activity that provides a unique experience for riders, as it combines risk with freedom and fun. The adrenaline rush associated with motorcycling can be attributed to riding a machine at high speeds increases the body’s heart rate, breathing rate, and alertness.  Catenian Dave Prescott, a dedicated biker, tells us all about it.

Half a century ago, I was buzzing with excitement, counting down the minutes until I could pick up my very first motorbike—well, technically a Garelli moped, but to me, it was the key to ultimate freedom! The thrill of hitting the open road, going wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted, was simply electrifying.

The psychology behind motorcycle riding is complex and multifaceted. It draws upon a combination of factors that have both physiological and psychological implications on the human mind. On the one hand, there’s the physicality of it.

On another level, motorcycling also has a deeper emotional significance for many riders. For some, it serves as an escape from life’s stresses, providing them with a much-needed break from their daily routines or mundane obligations, allowing them to explore new places, experience nature in its rawest form and feel truly alive in the moment.

Motorcycles also create opportunities for meaningful social connections between like-minded individuals who share similar passions and interests, promoting camaraderie among their members and providing further psychological rewards such as companionship and self-validation.

When taking into account these various aspects combined with their accessible yet challenging nature, it comes as no surprise why motorcycles offer so many therapeutic benefits to those who ride them regularly.

From that early beginning fast forward 50 years, and Dave’s passion hasn’t faded one bit. Over the years, Dave has owned around 35 different motorcycles, each one adding a new chapter to my riding adventures. Of course, like many bikers, I hit the midlife crisis phase and couldn’t resist the obligatory Harley-Davidson (or two!). But I quickly realized that my heart belonged to bikes that truly spoke to me—ones that made every ride an experience, not just a style statement

These days, I’m still chasing that same thrill, but on my own terms. My current rides? A BSA Gold Star and a Yamaha XSR 900, perfect for those dry, sunny days when the roads call my name. Sure, living in the UK means they don’t rack up too many miles, but when I do get out, it’s pure two-wheeled bliss.

After 50 years in the saddle, one thing’s for sure—I’m still loving every second of the ride!
